If you're staying at our holiday park in Colwell Bay, you're probably going to want to explore the local area and see what there is to do nearby. There are several towns and places of interest that you might want to check out, here's just a small selection.
The harbour town of Yarmouth is situated close to the Colwell Bay Holiday Park – in fact, it takes only ten minutes to drive there. You’ll find lots of things to do here suitable for the whole family. You could take a short boat cruise to see the Needles close up, explore the interesting Yarmouth Castle, or simply stop at one of the many fantastic pubs for some lunch. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll no doubt enjoy fantastic views of the Solent and see some of the oldest architecture on the island.
This beautiful pebbled beach offers crystal-clear waters, so it's a great place to go if you want to pull on your wellies and go rock-pooling. Keen snorkelers will also enjoy a visit to Freshwater Bay for the same reason, but it’s popular with surfers too.
Grab a cheeky ice cream or cream tea from The Freshwater Bay Café, one of the oldest beach cafés on the island. If you need something more substantial, there are plenty of other great places to eat nearby.
Not a watersports fan? Freshwater Village has a great golf course, museum and some fantastic walking routes.
An iconic landmark on the Isle of Wight, the Needles are a row of three chalk stacks near the coastline. There are various companies that offer boat trips around the Needles, allowing you to get as close to them as possible. You can also take a bus trip to the area, which gives you the opportunity to take in some stunning views across the water.
Nearby Alum Bay is famous for its beautiful multi-coloured sand cliffs, which you can take home with you in a shaped container of your choice from the Sand Shop. Of course, the long stretches of sand here make it the ideal beach to go for a paddle on, or you could take a dip in the sea if you’re feeling brave!
Compton Bay is located close to Freshwater Bay and is a haven for watersports fans. As a multi-tasking bay, it has two miles of sandy beach, as well as the perfect conditions for various water-related activities, including surfing.
It’s also a great place to go hunting for fossils – there’s even a dinosaur footprint in the ledge at Hanover Point. If you want to see it, it’s best to book a tour.
Bring your surfboard, bucket and spade, and a picnic for a fun-filled day on the coast.
This amusement park was designed with families in mind. It has rollercoasters, waterslides and six different themed worlds, allowing kids to become a pirate, cowboy or fairy for the day. As well as having the traditional rides, Blackgang Chine also features various exhibits and attractions as well. A huge whale skeleton is the oldest exhibit, as it’s been there since the park first opened more than 170 years ago!
If you are staying in Colwell Bay, there is plenty to do in the surrounding areas, whatever your age or the occasion. Of course, if you want to spend the majority of your time in the beautiful Colwell Bay, we won’t blame you!
