This pretty Edwardian resort overlooks the Solent and is a popular tourist hotspot. Sandy beaches stretch all the way from St Helens to Seaview and they are easily some of the most stunning beaches on the whole island. A regatta takes place every year, with various traditional activities going on in the village. It's worth visiting if you happen to be in the area at the right time of the year.
One of the most popular places to visit in Yaverland is the Isle of Wight Zoo, which has a collection of rescued tigers and other big cats, as well as a range of Madagascan animals. Its most famous resident is Casper the white lion – it’s worth a visit just to see him.
You'll also find a sailing club here in Yaverland, perfect if you fancy a day out at sea. If you only want a paddle, Yaverland Beach has swimming waters ideal for young children. The long stretches of sand are great for building sandcastles with too!
Shanklin is a busy resort, with a range of different tourist attractions. In addition to it's two sandy beaches, Shanklin also boasts restaurants, shops and independent boutiques. The Shanklin Chine, the oldest tourist attraction on the island, is well worth a trip. It’s a gorge full of rare plants and tranquil waterfalls – you’d be hard pushed to find a more relaxing spot.
If you fancy catching a show, the Shanklin Theatre regularly hosts plays, operas, pantomimes and more.
This large village is the closest to St Helens and is ideal if you're looking for somewhere that has a real, traditional feel to it. The Bembridge Windmill has become a landmark of its own, as it’s the only remaining windmill on the whole island. During the summer, it is open to the public and you can climb to the top to see how it all worked.
There are three different beaches here – each offer amazing panoramic views as well as the opportunity to go rock pooling.
Ryde is the largest town on the Isle of Wight and one of the main points of access to the island. As well as the usual shops and places to eat, during the summer Ryde hosts the Isle of Wight Scooter Rally and the International Classic Car Show - both are great fun whether you're into motor vehicles or not.
The esplanade has some great family attractions, including an ice rink, and it leads onto the popular canoe lake and fun fair. Of course, Ryde’s sandy beaches aren’t to be missed either.
If you've booked a holiday to St Helens, you will find plenty of villages and towns nearby that are worth checking out. Some of the busier ones have lots of different activities for children and adults alike, whereas other areas are quieter and make the perfect relaxation spot. Whatever you're looking for on your holiday, St Helens makes an ideal base camp for you to then explore the rest of what the Isle of Wight has to offer.
